OUGD504 - Studio Brief 1 - Book Cover Printing & Experimentation

When printing the design and type for the cover of the book, Yann Tschichold's book 'The Form Of The Book' was referenced and considered on many occasions. His rules of writing horizontally on the spine were adopted into the design however, his rule in always including the authors name e.g. 'Dylan Stott' would have significantly distracted the viewer from the main title of text and taken impact out of its bold design. Other factors which solidified this design decision were down to the laser cutter technology not being advanced enough to raster and engrave extremely small point text which was needed to add an authors name. The orientation of the text in relation to the front and back covers were also considered based on the concept that the bottom of the text should always lie flat on the back cover of the book, another one of the Tschichold's philosophies.

When printing the inks, I firstly experimented with the ink stamp bought online however, the black was not dark enough to get the desired impact. Consequently, I visited Fred Aldus and purchased a thicker black ink to use in the printing process.

Experimentation was conducted on using 2 different types of ink along with 2 different materials.

The two inks are displayed below
