OUGD503 - Inclusive Living - Sunlight & House Orientation Considerations

Researching further into architectural design, house orientation and window location are important factors to consider. The location of the sun in accordance with the buildings cardinal direction (N,S,E,W) play a huge role in the sustainability and temperature of a house. Seasons also come into consideration, as the outside temperature changes, systems have to be put in place to either cool or heat up a house. Some of the most eco friendly are shading devices, vents and insulation as they do not use any energy to activate.

Passive power uses free, renewable sources of energy such as the sun and wind to provide cooling, ventilation and lighting needs for a household. This additionally removes the need to use mechanical cooling. Applying passive cooling means reducing differenecs between outdoor and indoor temperatures, improving indoor air quality and making the building both a better and more comfortable environment to live or work in. It can also reduce levels of energy use and environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions.
