In order to research promotional material related to our event genre and era, we mainly used my book from the series of Level 5 blog posts which can be seen here: OUGD504 - Studio Brief 1
Many consistencies were found when dissecting the designs from the rave era, this analysis of these designs should heavily influence the future design decisions of the event in order to embed authenticity and historical accuracy within the project. Starting with the type and overarching aesthetics, many of the flyers abided to postmodern principles, this is mainly to represent anarchy and political rebellion within the designs. They sway away from the commercial mass-produced structured and organised designs in order to create an unconventional aesthetic consisting of hand-rendered type and regurgitated parodic imitations of popular media. This anti-governmental ideology is also transferred into the printing methods and stock choice where uncostly methods were used, utilising uncommercial printers in order to create homemade promotional material. Coloured stock seems to be a consistency throughout the research with black ink also being a regular occurrence in order save on the advertising costs of these illegal warehouse gatherings. Hand rendered illustrations also heavily feature in the designs which mostly seem to be drawn in ordinary biro-pens, this allows the designs to be scanned in and replicated across hundreds of flyers and posters.
