OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Primary & Secondary Demographic Research

During my time at the Henry Moore Institure, I surveyed the attendees on their age. These statistics were then put into a chart to see the difference in audience age groups.

After conducting primary research within the Henry Moore Institute, it was determined that the exhibition should be contemporised, making it more appealing to a wider audience, specifically the younger demographic who show less interest in historical exhibitions. Evidence of this can also be seen in an article posted by the Smithsonian Institution,

The article also states that expanded evening hours, marketing programs and advertising could be possible solutions to this problem identified within the demographic.

OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Aztec Historical Aesthetics Research

Aztec colour schemes, architecture, patterns, clothing, weaponry and typography was all taken into consideration moving forward with the design decisions of the project. It was important to be influenced by Aztec culture in order to be contextually appropriate when representing the exhibition.

OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Retro Futuristic Dada Influence

The Retro Futuristic Dada-like styles of Greco Roman and Greek/Renaissance of the mid 2000’s was also an influencial point to gather visual research from. I found that the recontextualisation of historical imagery, monuments, statues and artefacts could be a useful way of attracting younger audiences to the exhibitions.

OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Academic Literature

Since 2016, I have been reading academic literature based around postmodernism, this has been an influential factor in my understanding of image recontextualisation and postmodern processes. This project has also allowed me to become more well rounded as a creative practitioner, merging my theoretical and practical skills to produce a visual outcome.

OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Initial Ideas

The initial overarching theme of Postmodern design aesthetics has been explored further on how to apply it to a more substantial brief. By gathering primary research from historical exhibitions, I could create visual responses to the artefacts viewed. I could also think about the exhibition branding and how to contemporise a historical exhibition to appeal more to youth.

OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Timeplan & Project Management

OUGD603 - Brief 7 - Defining the Brief

Being a self set brief, it was important to define all mandatory aspects of the research stages and final resolution. It is however, very broad, in the design stages I hope to further define a direction for the project.

OUGD603 - Brief 6 - Evaluation & Reflection

Starting with just the concept of foreign typography, the brief has evolved throughout, adopting photography and photo manipulative techniques into the final resolution. Cultural and demographical appropriation was crucial for the outcomes to be relevant to foreign language structure, ideologies and subcultures. It was important to really study the culture of electronic music in Germany, this was vastly helped by the Berlin trip as it allowed me to view the industrial styles and raw energy through my own first hand experience.

Experimentation throughout the final concept has greatly impacted my own practice, the brief really allowed me to explore surrealism in the context of graphic design. This process of digital experimentation resulted in some unique and innovative final outcomes. My synthesis between visual elements and typography has also greatly increased, combining my camera skills with an advanced knowledge of Postmodern, grunge, hand rendered and digital typography. Aesthetically, the brief has also given me the opportunity to work with influences such as punk to broaden my visual understanding of design.

In terms of the final concept, it has been successful in a number of ways; even though it has embedded itself within an already saturated market of electronic music in Berlin, it stands out from its competitors by offering something new. The unique approach to venue locations and event timescale could be implemented into a working concept and be adopted into a functional part of Berlin's nightlife. To expand upon the brief in the future, I would like to work with interior design, props, and stage design to add more substance to my vision.

OUGD603 - Brief 6 - Final Typographic Design

Using a mixture of hand rendered and digital type, I have attempted to embed a style of grunge typography alongside traditional modernist typography inspired from the Bauhaus.
