OUGD505 - Studio Brief 2 - Possible Rallies, Events & Protests

In order to take full advantage of the positive opportunities available within this brief, I would like to use my design to create an impact within real world situations. If I can use my visual communication skills to positively influence just one member of the public within this brief, then I will view my efforts as being successful.

I have researched into a few possible routes to take to get my design into the hands of the public. Their are a couple of anti-racism rallies coming up in Leeds and Manchester which could be a great opportunity to hand out my design material wether it be small prints or banners etc...

The 'Otley Green Fair' has also been identified as a possible event which my work could be distributed at. In order to materialise these concepts, I must get in contact with the planners and organisers of these events to make a further enquiry.

Another possibility is the Saltaire Food Festival which hosts a large section of environmental artworkhowever, this is in September which may not be applicable to the projects deadline.

OUGD505 - Studio Brief 1 - Parody Print Concept

By utilising the 'BBC Test Card F' in one of my designs, I could recontextualise its core meaning therefore creating a parodic final print. This would reposition the BBC hosts from being very authoritarian to their transition becoming this new and unique head in the culture of dance music.

The print would represent the change in values which the BBC went through, specifically the BBC radio stations. This transition into dance music stemmed from the emergence of pirate radio stations at the time, a short article is linked about this below;

'In 1967, concerned at the growing number of pirate stations broadcasting over the UK and the potential interference to foreign radio stations, the British government passed the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act which made it illegal to advertise or supply an offshore radio station from the UK.  All the offshore stations off the British coast closed, with the exception of Radio Caroline, which moved its supply operation to the Netherlands where offshore broadcasting had not yet been outlawed. However, the advertising revenue from overseas sources was not forthcoming and the station was forced off the air less than a year later when the ships were impounded by the shipping company due to non payment. Six weeks after the Marine Offences Act was passed, the BBC introduced its national pop station Radio 1, modelled largely on the successful pirate formulae.

BBC Radio 1 was launched in September 1967 as a direct response to the popularity of offshore pirate radio stations and broadcast on 242 metres. The programmes came from Studio D, on the first floor of Broadcasting House and featured Tony Blackburn (formerly Radio Caroline and 'Wonderful Radio London') opening the station with "Flowers in the Rain" by The Move and the second single was "Massachusetts" by The Bee Gees. The programme formats were similar to the pirate stations and many of the popular DJs, like Blackburn featured prominently. John Peel, Ed Stewart, Dave Cash, Kenny Everett, Simon Dee, Dee Lee Travis, Emperor Roscoe, Mike Reid, and Annie Nightingale all became firm favourites. Needle time restrictions (a restriction on the amount of commercial music that could be played on radio) prevented it from playing as many records as offshore stations had, and limited finances from the State-run station meant Radio 1 was less successful at first but eventually, thanks to no real opposition, it gained massive audiences. Pick of the Pops presented by Australian DJ, Alan ‘Fluff” Freeman, was compulsive listening and ran from 1967 until 1972 and featured new entries to the top 30 best selling singles in the UK, as well as the complete Top 20. The Radio 1 Roadshow, which started in 1973, drew large crowds and featured many of the live acts of the time. Radio 1’s monopoly ended in 1973 when Independent Local Radio was introduced to the UK.   Radio 1’s format has continued to evolve to meet public taste.'

OUGD503 - Inclusive Living - Kingspan & Insulation Research

Research into different insulation methods have revealed these 'Kingspan' prefinished insulation tiles. These are a simple solution of how to insulate the building effectively without taking out too much inside space. Using these metal panels on the outside of the container will be a cost effective solution to decorating the outside aesthetics whilst also insulating the outhouse. They are quick to apply, moisture resistant, relatively cheap, modern and strong, the panels could also then have a recycled timber cladding applied to further insulate and further decorate.

OUGD503 - Disaster Aid/Emergency Packaging - Foldable Housing Research

Further research into flat packed housing has shown that it is possible to easily and effectively construct a connected flat packed housing system.

OUGD503 - Disaster Aid/Emergency Packaging - Origami Research

Looking at Origami or traditional Japanese lanterns structures has given the project more of an insight into folded structural design. These methods could easily be transferred into flat packed structures, replacing the paper with the Kayak material seen in the blog post OUGD503 - Substantial Briefs - Foldable Kayaks Inspiration.

The lantern below uses a concertina fold in order to be extended and flattened. This folding technique would be a proven method to use for the packaging of the modular houses however, keeping them rigid and stable once extended would be the biggest issue.

Laying the structures sideways once constructed and interconnecting the hexagonal shapes together would however create triangulation and stability. This could then be reinforced with poles to create additional triangulated points of strength inside the modular pods.

OUGD503 - Inclusive Living - Nursing Home Alternative Concept

By using shipping containers as the base for an outhouse, the building could be easily dropped into any properties land via a crane. This allows each unit to be reusable to be passed onto the next pensioner. This ‘granny pod’ system would be drastically cheaper than paying for traditional nursing homes whilst allowing the older generation to have more interaction with the family. For example, this would allow grandparents to have daily interaction with their grandchildren. Other specifications will also be helpful for the elderly population. Sliding doors and bathroom handles for example, will be more appropriate for customers with movement disabilities.

The containers will be linked to a emergency call network with call buttons for nurse attendance, this is to work in conjunction with the local government to save money looking after elderly people and
delaying the time for complete care. The occupants can stay in the containers and get looked after by their family, the local authority services, nurses, meals on wheels and so on...

OUGD503 - Inclusive Living - Customisation Concept

Tutor advice suggested that a good way to appeal to the elderly consumer would be to make the housing system more personal. The elderly generation tend to have pride in their lifelong possessions and styles and therefore, a modern outhouse with no character may be quite alien to them. By making each pod somewhat customisable to the customer, it could embed a sense of home within the building. Therefore, a system would be put in place, allowing the customer to edit aspects of their outhouse before the building is delivered.

Aspects which could be customised:

  • Size
  • Colour
  • Fittings
  • Plantlife
  • Cladding (timber covering etc...)
  • Lighting
  • Furniture
  • Disabled handles (removed/applied)

OUGD503 - Inclusive Living - Digital Designs

Using the conceptual sketches as a base for the design (OUGD503 - Inclusive Living - Sketching Conceptual Designs), digital outhouse illustrations were constructed on Adobe Illustrator. These initial designs have been informed by every part of research conducted so far. It takes influence from the sustainable aspects, along with architectural drawing techniques from Fraser Reekie's book.

The interior layout of the house includes one bedroom, one bathroom and an open plan kitchen / living space. From the front door, each room can be easily accessed via wheelchair, the open plan hallway to the bedroom has been designed in order to maximise accessibility and user experience.

OUGD503 - Collaborative Practice - Script Writing & Character Overview

As a team, we wrote a draft script for our first filming scene next week. Sadly, because of travelling to Berlin, I will not be able to attend the filming induction however, I will be back in time to take part in the filming of the pilot teaser next Friday. This has been effectively communicated to the group and worked around to accommodate with everyones schedules.

FILMED AND SUBMITTED SHORT PILOT

FADE IN:

INT. JAMES’ FLAT - DAY

James arrives home through the front door after a day at work, hangs up jacket, puts on slippers, cooks, plays online chess, does chores.

INT. JAMES’ FLAT - NIGHT

After winding down, James begins to get ready to go to bed and goes to brush his teeth.

(tense/atmospheric music begins)

  1. James looks at himself in the mirror. Hears a slight bang from outside the room behind him. Stops dead, spins head towards sound and listens (3-5s)
  2. James shrugs off sound and puts toothpaste on brush.
  3. James Raises toothbrush to mouth, hears what sounds like a can opening coming from the same direction. Spins around to listen.
  4. James shrugs this off once again, brushes teeth.
  5. While rinsing toothbrush James hears one last, louder bang emanating from the bedroom. Throws down what he’s doing and runs through to his bedroom to look.
  6. Searches around the room, finds nothing. Uneasily gets into bed and tries to get to sleep.

As James starts to fall asleep. A mysterious voices echoes from behind him:

GARY
Move over a bit mate!

As James is laid on his side facing out from the bed, a ghostly head peeks up from behind him momentarily, just out of James’ field of view. Panicked and shocked by the voice, James sharply sits up in bed, spinning to look behind him, but sees nothing. James lays down, visibly shaken.
INT. JAMES’ FLAT - DAY

(pov camera)

James wakes up, slightly confused and his vision is still blurry. He gets out of bed, rubs his eyes and slowly walks to the bathroom with his head down, looking at his feet.

James gets to the bathroom and looks up as he enters the threshold. There, with his vision still blurry and sleepy, he sees a ghost, as plain as day, sat on the toilet on what appears to be a mobile phone.

He stares in disbelief for a few seconds before falling back and passing out.

INT. JAMES’ FLAT - DAY

(pov camera)

James wakes up to see Gary towering over him, eating, with a halo of light from the ceiling.

GARY
You alright mate?

(pov camera ends)
James is still laid on the floor, with Gary hunched over him.

JAMES
(confused)
Am I dead?

GARY
(mumbled rant)
I don’t think so
(pause)
Do you have any more mayo, this
is a bit dry. I know, I probably
shouldn’t be having mayo with
the diet n’ all, but I guess
that doesn’t matter anymore…
(trailing off)

JAMES
(interrupting)
What’s goin on?
GARY
(mumbled rant)
Oh yeah, sorry, I should probably
explain.... I’m a ghost, they
said something about haunting,
unfinished business, spiritual
blah blah blah? I don’t really
know… Do you have any more mayo
or should I nip to the shops?

James stares blankly at Gary, Gary stares blankly back.
