OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Glass Finishing & Framing

After experimenting with acrylic glass, I decided to use a standard pane of glass as the clarity was much purer for showcasing the design. Two layers were applied with the vinyl cut notes raised above on the second layer to add depth to the piece. It was then framed to finish the final resolution as a decorative piece.

OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Experimentation

Acrylic glass was used within the initial experimentation of the design, however after extended consideration, it has been decided that I will use standard glass for the final piece. This is due to the clarity and clean cuts of standard glass. Also the application of spray mount to the glass added noise to the result within this experimentation stage. For the final piece, spray mount will not be used.

OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Colour Choice

The initial designs of the project have all been designed in black & white to subtly hint towards the media of the 1940's, with colour television broadcasts only becoming available in the 1950's.

OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Vinyl Record Primary Research

The square dimensions of the project instantly reflected a vinyl cover to me, therefore, I visited some vinyl stores around Leeds to gather some research of the aesthetic styles used within the Jazz genre.

OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Typeface Research

To create a design which was contextually appropriate to the time period and location of 1940's New York, I researched into various fonts which were produced around this time. When creating a homage to an artist or style, it is important to thoroughly research the history of the design in order to be aesthetically fitting and factually correct. I have researched these typefaces alongside the research from Soul/Jazz vinyl covers to make sure that I also represent the musical genre. Merging these two pieces of research together should help me to find the most appropriate typefaces for my design.

OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Musician Song Research

To visually represent one of Nat Jaffes songs, I researched into his music using the website https://www.musicnotes.com. The aesthetics of musical notes are contextually relevant to his style of music and the time period of the 1940's. It also allows me to take a section of one of is pieces of music and subtly implement it within my designs.

OUGD603 - Brief 5 - Timeplan & Project Management

OUGD603 - Brief 5 - 27 Forever Brief Analysis

With the brief being so broad and open to interpretation, I thought that the first steps should be narrowing down the artists to define the brief more clearly. I went through the list listening to their music to find an artist who I can passionately create a piece of artwork for. The only way to represent an artist to the best of my ability is to study the music they produced.

The two final candidates are Nat Jaffe, a swing jazz pianist, and Jacob Miller, a reggae artist. Reggae and Swing Jazz are two genres which I really enjoy listening to but have not had much chance to produce any artwork for in the past. This is why these two artists have been chosen.

OUGD603 - Brief 4 - Evaluation & Reflection

With the brief having a large amount of information to analyse, I dissected every detail of what the client was asking. Having this criteria already set out really helped to define a direction for my project. A large body of research was conducted into the client, their history and morals as a company along with competitor brands. I could gather an idea of their ethics and what is realistically possible to produce given the companies worldwide scale.

For me, it was an opportunity to embed some of my own morals and ideologies into the project in the hope that my project may go on to make a positive impact to the world. Homelessness is a huge area which I hope to impact positively throughout my career, my volunteering within Manchester Lifeshare Homeless Shelter was a great source of inspiration and primary research which helped to form the concept.

Overall, I think that the concept successfully raises awareness for the issue of homelessness along with directly answering the brief in an innovative way. Given more time, I would like to produce a prototype magazine with a larger span of content for the first issue of the publication.

OUGD603 - Brief 4 - D&AD Submission

I submitted the final project to D&AD today, aiming the brief and bio towards a white pencil award, an award which creates a positive impact to the world.

Project Bio:

The foundation of the project is a print-based publication which showcases opportunities and city-based sports activities aimed towards youth homelessness. The main concept behind the magazine is that it will be distributed by youth homeless, giving them a platform to start earning their own income and job security. It will be a relevant and up to date offline platform which will be a catalyst for propelling sport throughout city centres; including sports news and fundraising activities for the general public. Different printed editions would be produced based on location, which vary in language and content relative to each main city.

This project not only raises the public awareness of youth homelessness within city centres, but also makes a real impact to the homeless population themselves by offering job opportunities and financial stability. Youth homelessness is much more than just living on the streets, it’s usually invisible to the public eye. Much of the youth homeless population is ‘couch surfing’ or sleeping rough with no financial support from family or friends. By offering training and financial profit through the magazine vendor programme, Adidas can offer a career pathway for people on the edge of becoming homeless, with limited job opportunities available.

OUGD603 - Brief 4 - Future Ambitions

Even though the Adidas brief was limited to specific main cities, this concept could easily be adopted into other cities across the globe. Youth homelessness is a worldwide issue and therefore, it could benefit a lot of people in a variety of different countries and cities. An online presence could be applied to boost publicity and advertising of the magazine however, it is important to keep the magazine in a printed format so that the vendors and homeless could benefit the most.
