The second spread approaches the use of white space alongside body paragraphs of text. These empty lines break up the text making the article so much easier to read and inviting. If the white columns had text inside, the article would look too busy and repulse the viewer into reading. The negative space along the whole top quarter row of the page is an intriguing view of how lines can carry on into negative space and yet the space is still labeled as white space. This is a compelling use of visible grid systems in magazine design.
Again the use of white space around the letters creates a strong balance with the negative space around the photograph. Even though the orange number is 1 is large long side the text, it almost becomes white space because of its opacity and the fact that it is layered behind the block text. This is an interesting approach as the designer adds multiple colours into his negative space, the 1 becomes a part of the background instead of an image alongside the text.
The last article seems to portray a sense of seriousness with the claustrophobic spacing between paragraphs and the use of red and black colour scheme. Both of which usually foreshadow danger or solemness in an article. There is some negative space to separate the red and black however, I find the document too repetitive with too many orphans and widows in the large body's of text which are incorporated into the design.
