OUGD403 - Setting Type Presentation - Key Observations

Some interesting sources of inspiration for me to look into are listed below -

Modern magazine 2015
The gourmand
Colours may vary (shop)
Monocle
Flaneur
Uncube architecture mag
The alpine review

I also found that in lots of the magazines, they were initializing digital working in harmony with printed copys instead of just trying to replicate the magazine digitally. Ways this was accomplished was by using unprintables on their website such as video, audio files and podcasts. This a really interesting perspective of running a magazine by utilizing all the different aspects of print, digital, apps and the internet. It is a way of taking advantage of all the accolades associated with each of the contrasting platforms.

Orphans & Widows

I don't believe that these things are bad. If you want to produce something which is as legible and readable as possible then the rules to extract orphans and widows would probably be best to follow. However, why would you want to replicate these rules over and over, all graphic pieces of text would look the same and have no differentiation between paragraphs. All graphic designers work would be the same and it would take personality ans depth out of your expressionate text. I personally disagree with the rules and believe that in some cases it can look visually appealing to have some orphans and widows in your work to not make your paragraphs look too repetitive to the eye.
