OUGD403 - Studio Brief 2 - Typeface Design (Continued) & Crit Feedback

Newtonian

Relating with the Newtonian physics which define weight, this bold serif font has been designed to create impact whilst still keeping the professionalism of  typefaces such as 'Bodoni' or 'Garamond'. Used more effectively for dramatic headers in magazines and newspapers, Newtonian creates subtle increased differences in the stem and bowls of letter forms to portray a strong sense of importance. It also differs from its competitors by using bold sharp serifs, ears and terminals which allocate a sense of a Gothic genre. Used for screen documents and print, the typeface has more impactful effect on the audience when the size is drastically increased billboard dimensions.

These are some stages of slightly tweaking 'Garamond' to complete a completely new typeface. I started experiments on 'Bodoni' but then felt that 'Garamond was a more suirable font choice. I have only created the letters 'NEWTONIAN' yet as the process is long and tedious however, I feel that the full alphabet could be quite successful.

The feedback was all very positive suggesting that I should keep on track with where this project is going. I should also try more interesting variations of letter forms such as the 'O' with the line inside. It was suggested that the 'W' might be an interesting letter to play around with.

At the bottom you can see the diffreneces between this typeface and 'Garamond' side by side.
