I have chosen to mock up the grid system for the guardian newspaper using tracing paper in order to get an overview of the grid system which the guardian uses. From what i could extract, they seem to use a 10 column system which is very beneficial for a newspaper as it creates more diverse page variations. They usually abide to using two columns per block of text (2/10) however, being able to split these sections in half (1/10) creates the ability to add image headers and footers. This can be seen in the dark grey text box with white lettering which is overlayed over the main photograph.
I believe that as a newspaper editor, it is important to have as many grid sections as possible in order to keep your magazine fresh and not too repetitive. However, it is crucial to keep a balance so that the magazine has some resemblance in each page, otherwise the articles would look to random and lack the relationship which gives the newspaper its personal identity.
I have no doubt that the official guardian grid system is more complex than my mock up nevertheless, I feel that from what I have interpreted, the grid system is exceptionally suitable for a formal magazine due to the areas available for large body's of text.
