OUGD503 - Substantial Briefs - Bee Hive Research

The outcomes produced in the previous brief which can be seen in the blog post,
got me thinking about why bees produce hexagonal shapes in their natural designs.

Further research into the TED talk 'The Honeybee and the Hexagon' and Brian Cox's 'Forces of Nature' documentary suggest that this is the reasoning behind this hexagonal structure is that its the most material efficient shape which withholds structural integrity whilst connecting within a network. Each hexagonal cell can utilise another surface area and work together in order to be material efficient.

This material efficiency and structural integrity could be implemented into areas of the world which are low on materials or are in naturally harsh environments which require strong structural buildings. This would be an interesting concept to expand upon within Starpacks 'Disaster Aid/Emergency Packaging' brief.
