OUGD504 - Studio Brief 2 - Legible Line Length Considerations

Following on from the previous blog post regarding Massimo Vignelli's legible line length,

'Minimum line length is Massimo Vignelli's 8-12 words per line however, minimum for screen can be slightly shorter. This is due to grid systems and screen transition within mobile devices, the line length is drastically reduced on many occasions if websites have partnering apps.'

I have since researched further into some studies conducted last year which state that the attention span of humans have drastically decreased in recent years due to smartphones. This could be an indication that Vignelli's legible line length will soon be reduced to be more fitting with modern society as the human eye gradually evolves.

This observation will inform the line length in my platform interface to more appropriately suit the digital age user. Due to this study, my line length will most likely be shorter.

'According to scientists, the age of smartphones has left humans with such a short attention span.Researchers surveyed 2,000 participants in Canada and studied the brain activity of 112 others using electroencephalograms. The results showed the average human attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000, or around the time the mobile revolution began, to eight seconds.

The study, by technology giant Microsoft, did however find that the ability of humans to multitask has improved.'
