OUGD404 - Studio Brief 1 - Evaluation
I wanted to interpret this brief in my own manner in order to apply some of my own personal touches and interests into my publication design. My huge interest in architecture and photography gave me the opportunity to conduct photoshoots both in England and Australia in order to attempt to create relationships which I personally saw between publication grid system design and the grid system designs used in architecture. My inspiration for this concept probably originates from looking at countless of my fathers architectural drawings, when learning about the grid system design principle, I instantly saw a clear relationship. My intention was to use my primary source photography in as much as a graphical way as possible in order to represent grid systems in graphic design as much as possible. I only used images taken which held strong connotations of grid system composition and layout. For the production method, I chose to create a publication keeping mass production methods in mind as the publication was a concept for the first of a series of 'Architecture in Design' publications. Therefore, I printed on magazine stock with simple staple binding to stay in co-ordinence with modernist architecture, grids and printing methods. I felt as though a manual binding method would be the wrong approach for a publication which represented modernist values. Overall, I felt that much of the photography was wasted as only a few of the shots went into the final design and with more time I would have liked to include some of this photography into the publication. If the magazine was to go into mass production, this small publication would only be an initial prototype, the final magazine would be larger with much more pages to showcase more of the photography. I was also forced to trim the corners of the inside of the pages, this was due to one of the corners slightly ripping in the binding method and therefore I had to come up with a solution as digital print was booked up for weeks. This does however give the publication some diversity against traditional book design but I am not sure if it would be included in the mass produced publication.
